The Mission
Rooted in the classic jazz sound of the 50s and 60s most inventive and influential drummers, Funch Cymbals inspires artists around the world to find their own original voice. Like the musicians who play them, each cymbal is unique – with its own personality, it’s own soul.

The Story
After earning my degree in performance as a jazz drummer at the Danish National Academy of Music, I set out to merge my passion for sound with a love for craftsmanship. In 2017, Funch Cymbals was born in a small workshop in Copenhagen’s Meatpacking District, where I started modifying cymbals for local drummers. As word spread and demand grew, so did the dream, and I began experimenting with original creations. To help advance my knowledge and skills I traveled twice to Istanbul to study the ancient art of Turkish cymbal making. Shortly after, I brought my father – a skilled carpenter – on board to help build a dedicated workshop in the countryside near Ringsted, where I continue to handcraft cymbals today.

The Craft
Like the cymbalsmiths and pioneering drummers of the mid-century era, I try to keep an open-minded and innovative approach to my craft. What sets a Funch cymbal apart is the fusion of Turkish cymbal-making heritage with traditional Danish gørtler techniques – a rare craft dating back to the Middle Ages. The gørtlers were artisans who specialized in shaping copper alloys like brass and bronze with extraordinary detail. Their legacy can still be seen in the ornamental spires of Copenhagen’s iconic copper rooftops – shaped by hands that valued both function and beauty.

The Material
At Funch Cymbals, we use only the finest B20 bronze – an alloy of 80% copper and 20% tin. B20 is also known as “bell bronze”, as it has been used for church bells for centuries due to its rich, complex, and sustained resonance that no other material can replicate. Bell bronze also has the remarkable property of retaining its tonal character for generations, making it the ideal choice for timeless high-quality musical instruments.
The Result
A Funch cymbal is a manifestation of the magic that happens when cultures merge, when only the finest materials are chosen, and when innovation becomes tradition. Each cymbal is a highly musical instrument of supreme quality – made to inspire.
